Safi was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley of Southern California. She was immediately drawn to photography as a young child and has had a camera in-hand ever since. She uses her camera as a vehicle for making sense of the world and often plays with or explores identity and constructed identity in her work, whether photographing herself or others. She is interested in the way people present and represent themselves in comparison to who they actually are in their private lives or personal space. She is also intrigued by images that provoke a sense of otherworldliness.
