This project investigates the remains of satellite calibration targets in the Sonoran Desert created as part of a secret surveillance program in the mid 1960’s. These markers of space have become markers of time, representing a poignant moment in geopolitical and technologic social history. The joint CIA/Air Force classified project known as Corona produced the world’s first successful mapping effort from space. We photograph the massive artifacts, made to been seen from the sky, using a sixteen foot telescoping boom on the ground. Corona’s architectural forms are potent anthropologic landmarks representing the primal human desire to see from above.
