Every month in a different village in rural Uruguay, hundreds of people gather to watch and to participate in a endurance competition where teams of horses, jockeys and support pickup trucks race for a total of 90km (56 miles) through small roads. Called “raid”, the race always starts the day before with a session of bets and then with a dance that goes through the whole night up to the early hours of the day when the “raidistas” are leaving followed by their team’s support trucks who need to be close to the horses all the time in order to throw water and cool down the animals during the race. Very few horses manage to finish the race since the effort is brutal and the jockeys are treated like real sport celebrities in this culture.
