At 1,300 feet below sea level, the Dead Sea exhibits some of the harshest conditions on earth. The water is tremendously salty, and fish cannot survive there. In fact, the salt is so dense that floating in the water takes little effort. History reveals that from distant hills, Moses brought the children of Israel to these shores to peer into the Promised Land. Looking at these Tamarisk trees – the same species Abraham planted at Beer-sheba, craning their branches above the brackish water, made me think of the patriarch of Israel. For this image, I was racing against the setting sun. I asked my Israeli friend Ofer to help me hurriedly set up atop the van so I could shoot the Zen-like setting of the blue waters anchored with the tamarisk. Just after I released the shutter trigger, the light was gone.
