The legendary and iconic Ansel Adams often found Hawaii to be a daunting challenge for his black and white portraitures. The sheer power of the island’s rich colors would often eclipse the subtleties of the textures and tonal ranges captured brilliantly in the body of Ansel’s black and white signature. So it should be no surprise to learn of his ongoing frustration while working in the Hawaiian paradise. However, a seasoned photographer and a wise student of life both know that the true secret of success is persistence. Keep mining until you find those hidden gems. After many years of running the volcanic shores of Hawaii’s majestic islands, I finally decided to create a new collection: “Islands of Light.” My recent visit to Maui offered many pleasant surprises along the way and a number disheartening challenges. One of my most difficult disappointments was the persistent low cloud ceiling making for a dearth of dramatic sunsets. You can only imagine the frustration of being a witness to the beautifully textured clouds speaking with their emotional voice and a setting sun that would not paint the colors I longed to capture. I persevered...waiting and still, nothing. One morning I woke with an epiphany. I decided to use this challenge of a lack of color to my advantage. I would shoot in black and white. The waiting proved fruitful and the results embraced a timeless and iconic image in the spirit of what Ansel Adams had long ago pursued. “Sacred Bay” was born.
