This title is the title of Jerzy Kosinski's novel which Mary Daly, an American feminist, borrowed it to explain her ideas in her book, GYN/ECOLOGY. In the novel there is a man who vents his sexual frustration upon birds by painting their feathers. The women engage upon widespread beauty advertising to reach beauty. The fear of being ugly, the fear of not being attractive due to ageing, come from standard beauty by pervasive advertising. This photo recalls the foot-binding, binding Chinese women's foot in the past because of men's sexual desire, or any other parody of the struggle for beauty.
