This series documents the coverage I have done of the Crisis in Eastern Ukraine, where the country is is on the brink of war. Clashes between the Ukrainian army, as well as private guerrillas belonging to oligarchs, and pro-Russian rebels, who have taken at least 11 cities and have proclaimed two "Independent Republics" in Donetsk and Lugansk after the referendum of 11 May, have been taking place since April 2014. Ukrainian forces launched an offensive, described by Kiev as "antiterrorist operation" to end the pro-Russian uprising.

Story

Crisis in Eastern Ukraine.

Ukraine, after Russia, the most powerful country emerged from the breakup of the Soviet Union, is on the brink of war. In Nov. 2013 citizen protests began by discontent with the authorities' refusal to sign an association agreement with the EU.

After the accession of Crimea to Russia, the crisis has centered at the east of the country, where clashes between the Ukrainian army, as well as private guerrillas belonging to oligarchs, and pro-Russian rebels, who have taken at least 11 cities and have proclaimed two "Independent Republics" in Donetsk and Lugansk after the referendum of 11 May, have been taking place since April 2014. Ukrainian forces launched an offensive, described by Kiev as "antiterrorist operation" to end the pro-Russian uprising.

The sense of regional identity and the economy, that affects Europe makes the situation an issue of vital geopolitical and economical importance, as 80% Russian gas passes by Ukraine and a key to build a lasting peace between Russia and the Western powers.

Violence between pro-Russian militia and Ukrainian forces in eastern Ukraine has left at least 356 people dead, according to data collected by the observer group established by the UN to assess the human rights violations perpetrated in the country.
