Even though America remains a beacon of liberty, we always must remember that it's during the darkest hours when our commitment to human rights will be most severely tested. Once again the national dialogue turns to defining our enemies, and the impulse to smear whole communities or people with the actions of others has sometimes risen to the fore. Which is why Manzanar still retains its relevance, after more than half a century. And so, we remember what we must never forget.
