Entry Description: Last Game of the season for Pearl-Cohn High School defeated by Giles County.

Story: Pearl School became the first African American High School in 1883. By 1983 it was combined with predominately white student body of Cohn High School under the Nashville’s desegregation plan. Against the tide of racism and inequality Pearl High School prospered and grew. “W.E.B. Dubois noted in his biography that before he visited Nashville in the 1880’s, he had never seen people of color with so much self-assurance”. 1 Today it is the only entertainment industry focused magnet high school in the United States. Although it has experienced many adjustments Pearl-Cohn has remained in the North Nashville neighborhood, a predominately African American community. Giles County High School is located in Pulaski, Tennessee, the birthplace of the Ku Klux Klan. 1. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/partners/early/e_pearl_1.html
