PHOTOGRAPHY DIRECTOR

Cheryl Newman is the award winning Telegraph magazine’s photography director. Since 2001 she has raised its profile commissioning globally respected photographers as well as young talent found through colleges, festivals and portfolio reviews, often giving first commissions. Cheryl’s commissioning includes, fashion, fine art and portraiture and alongside these she can have documentary photographers working in conflict zones, making truthful, relevant stories.

A fine art graduate she works closely with photographers on book and exhibition projects. She was responsible for bringing the prestigious Deutsche Borse European photography prize to the magazine, which celebrates it tenth year of partnership in 2014.

Cheryl is a regular visitor at universities within the UK and on the faculty of the Bilder Nordic Photography School in Oslo. She has taught photography workshops in the UK and Europe. She has served as committee member for the Royal Photographic Society Awards, has also been a judge on many international competitions including the Editors Choice Awards Santa Fe, Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize at the National Portrait Gallery, and the Getty Grant, amongst others. She is also a photographer and curator and a contributing writer on photography for the Daily Telegraph
