Amar is a member of the Syria Civil Defense also known as the 'White Helmets'. He took this photo after the death of his colleague and friend. For him the photograph represents harmony in two ways. The white helmet has become an international and iconic symbol of the ongoing conflict in Syria; of the courage and determination of the men and women who risk their lives on a daily basis in the service of their communities. The blood stains are a stark reminder of the selfless sacrifice and dedication of the ‘White Helmets’ as they work tirelessly to create harmony in the world around them. The flowers were placed by Amar to contrast the harsh reality of the war with colour and beauty. To honour the loss of his colleague and friend and to simultaneously represent hope and the dream that he harbours for a country filled with peace and harmony.
