An extension of my Light Leaks series, these new prints are intended to transcend the material aspect of my subject, in this case, the human form, and illustrate something universal yet elusive that ordinarily escapes the gaze of convention. There is a sentiment I heard long ago that informs this work…it goes, and I’m paraphrasing, “Great art is stripped of everything but what is essential.” I really appreciate the implications of this. In these images of hairless models, I’m interested in how, by renouncing traditions of femininity, the seemingly androgynous figures contain an ambiguous beauty that has become distilled. The models convey something I found striking and wanted to articulate photographically, and perhaps what that is is a certain purity that emanates from their anatomical democracy.
