At dawn on May Morning (1st May) 2005, Oxford, crowds gathered together on Magdalen Bridge to listen to the choristers singing from the top of Magdalen College tower. Oxford’s May Day celebrations formerly included another ‘tradition’, which involved students jumping into the River Cherwell from the Bridge, which is just under 8 metres high! The river is only waist-deep at this point, as is shown clearly by the student standing in the water (p. 142). In 2005 more than a hundred students jumped into the river, and the number of injuries was consequently very high. Since then Magdalen Bridge has been entirely closed on May Day.
