These images are from a series of studies of man-made structures being reclaimed by nature. The juxtaposition of architectural components with natural forms intrigues me since the exterior has merged with the interior. The organic elements change in a matter of moments or days, while the buildings decay slowly over many years. These structures were built by slaves on St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands to produce rum and sugar. While that dark era has passed, the remains of hand-built walls of stone and coral serve as reminders that our time on this earth is momentary, much like the images captured by the camera.
