Delray Beach, Florida has been a thriving enclave of Haitian culture since the late 1970s. The community is diverse- home to new, undocumented immigrants who struggle with poverty as well as established residents who have raised families and created prosperous businesses. Many Haitians work to send a portion of their paychecks back to families in Haiti, providing much needed income, particularly after the January earthquake. New immigrants face challenges like adapting to American culture and navigating the legal system, but in Delray Beach, the Haitian community acts as an extended family, providing assistance and support.
