Dubai is the sort of place that most people either fall in love with or hate. It represents so many facets of the modern globalised city that it is not hard to be on the one hand, inspired and impressed by it, while on the other hand offended and left confused by it. Dubai faces two great challenges; trying to maintain a social structure that favours the rich and few, and managing to continue to expand in one of the driest places on earth. It remains to be seen whether money and a stubborn Bedouin attitude will be enough.
