The election of Barack Obama as President of the United States coupled with a Democratic-controlled congress has set a right-wing backlash in motion. The most recent and prominent group to emerge at the forefront of this backlash is the ‘Tea Party’ movement. The far-right political activist group is disjointed, yet gaining momentum nonetheless. The grassroots organization started in homes and small rallies across the United States but has now expanded exponentially with figureheads like Sarah Palin fanning the flames. Tea Party members claim that their message is based on lower taxes, smaller government, and Christian values, yet undertones of hatred, racism and fear are ever-present.
