Story

This is a side street market in Shanghai. The Bamboo scaffolding was put up to fix up the buildings ahead of the World Fair. During the Fair this market, and other like it will be shut down permanently as Shanghai attempts to move to a modern western-like society, loosing cultural jewels like this in the process. On the one hand this modernization means better living conditions for many, lifting many out of poverty and pushing them into the middle class. Conversely, it also means a serious deterioration of China’s own rich and diverse culture in an attempt to put on a more cosmopolitan face. The Chinese government is callously watering down its culture, and in a few years time this historically rich city with be indistinguishable from any other world city.
