Kosmach is a very old Hutsul village, where the ancient traditions are carefully kept. Melanka is Ukrainian folk holiday celebrated on January 13th. Carolers in costumes and masks go from house to house in the village with playing pranks and acting short scenes. There are several traditional roles: "old man" and "old woman", "Melanka" and "Vasyl", "gypsy", "jew", "gendarme", "drunkard", "doctor" and many "devils". Boys in "devils" costumes play jokes in yards and near visited houses: they throw tires on the roof, move carts from the house to other place, throw wood beams.
