For centuries hundreds of Gypsy and Traveller families from all over Ireland and the UK have gathered at the Appleby Horse Fair in Cumbria. The modern world is increasingly difficult for these communities, who are increasingly ostracised in the UK, are often illiterate and claim that moving from their trailers into settled homes would be like prison. Appleby provides an opportunity to witness much of what makes their traditions and life so unique. On Fair Hill, where they set up camp for a long weekend, religion, animals, friendship and community - central themes in their lives - are apparent everywhere. They are a part of nature and their environment in a way that most settled communities have lost. For a few days at the Appleby Fair, they celebrate a lifestyle and world that are fast disappearing.
