Our relation to the landscape is influenced by our perspective. Just as we have redefined the actual landscape with and for our vehicles, we must now update our virtual view of the landscape as a genre in art. We view the landscape now from our moving vehicles. I photograph with a digital slitscan camera of my own design and construction. Photoshop manupulation is not used. By using this camera which shoots only a single pixel column at any one time, I can, in effect, scan the landscape. The unusual characteristics of the scanning camera give the resulting photographs a lack of single-point perspective, visually flattening the scene into a painterly composition. Using the camera’s natural tendency toward compression and elongation of certain elements of the scene moving past the camera, I seek to strike a balance between abstraction and recognizable “photographic” realism.
