This work considers the paradox of formal portraiture as a memorializing agent; portraiture creates a skeleton upon which the detailed construction of social memory can be stitched. With these collaged images we have tried to question the idealized moment of commemoration, disrupting its essence by combining the photograph and the found, cutting and shaping objects and imagery in an effort to interweave memory. The combining of found imagery and clothing with formal portraits allows us to fashion a space that is both public and private, the work has a strange familiarity whilst being exotic and foreign.
