I read once; painters have the advantage of being able to place light in their painting anywhere they wish; whereas, photographers must use a fixed light source. I decided to try to paint my subject with my light source, and put the light where I wanted. I shot on and off for 2 years with the same model, in a totally black studio; working to understand what the effects of timing, distance, and flashlight size had on the finished photo. Then we had to learn how to move the pose in total darkness, without being able to see anything, and keep in register.
