I found this composition off Bear Island, in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, in Lake Superior, the previous afternoon. On this morning, I donned my drysuit in the dark, and kayaked back to it so I’d be ready before sunrise. Because of the extreme contrast, as well as depth of field needs, I carefully planned out the focus and exposure needed for each area of the composition. Back in my studio, I converted each RAW file into a Smart Object and layered them into one file. I then used masks to reveal the optimal area from each capture.
