I spent a year photographing the Goth scene. Any preconceived notions I had about this subculture being dark and dangerous were dispelled. Most people were over 25, highly intelligent and “productive members of society”. Likes the rest of us, they want acceptance regardless of their looks or sexual preference. They are the epitome of living art. They redesign their physical appearances often on a weekly basis. Sometimes I did not recognize them even if I had photographed them before. I use portraiture to explore our dualities. By calling attention to our differences, I hope we can appreciate our human commonalities.
