In contemporary culture, more and more people are finding themselves isolated or detached from society in one form or another. Humanity is more alone and withdrawn now then ever before. It is my intention to create images illustrating this condition. I live in New York, one of the most densely populated and technologically advanced cites in the world. Yet there seems to be more people alone and isolated here than anywhere else. As a visual artist I want to explore this contemporary human experience. For this particular project I chose to work with struggling models. These are people who are used to posing in front of the camera in a highly controlled environment; a studio setting, in make up and costume. In contrast here I am photographing them in their personal living spaces, without costume or make-up, using natural ambient lighting. I like using things like windows, mirrors, and doorways as visual metaphors, which act in harmony with the gaze, the stance, the posture and the light. This along with the natural landscape of their personal environment is what the project is about. My goal here is to show the emotional horror and the hidden beauty of these people within the parameters of themselves and their living spaces. This is usually a side of these people that is purposely hidden. This is the reality of who they really are.
