Inspired by the seminal work of one of the pioneers of Photography, Anna Atkins, British artist Nick Veasey has created a body of work ‘Cyanotypes of X-Rays of Seaweed’. Nick Veasey has built his career around the x-ray but this is the first project where he makes the finished artworks by his own hand. The process starts with hunting on the seashore for suitable seaweeds. Returning to his x-ray studio, the seaweeds are then prepared for exposure to x-rays. These x-rays are captured on film. That film is then contact printed onto handmade paper using the historic Cyanotype process in much the same way that Anna Atkins did over 150 years ago.
