150 cm x 150 cm ea. ( Images are composites made up of many different tissue paper packets ) The tissue packet; a banal object, is symbolic of a social practice of reserving seats in Singapore. Following a tacit agreement, this activity is performed in a poised and consistent rhythm. The meaning of “Chope” is a local term that refers to the act of reserving a space within a food centre in Singapore. The three objects depicted here are, from left to right; an Indian elephant stand, a Chinese vase, as well as a Malay Wau Kite; representing the multicultural society in Singapore. This structured approach adopted further exemplifies the artistʼs intentions to reveal this authoritative act of reserving or demanding for a space, which leaves no room for a publicʼs response. Interweaving notions of multiculturalism and identity, the artist questions the presence of culture within Singapore.
