This photograph was taken the morning after the storm in Joplin, Missouri. The cross stands on a hill overlooking the most devastated areas of the city, and it was one of the first sights I witnessed upon arriving there. Much of what was left of the surrounding church was cleared shortly thereafter, including the headless statue in the foreground, its hands clasped in prayer.
