Southwood is a large mobile home park outside of Charlottesville, Virginia, which a nonprofit organization plans to remove and replace with a mixed income housing development. The closing of this neighborhood is symbolic of a nationwide decline in this form of affordable housing. Children, of course, have no say in where they live, and most don’t know anything different. They tend to make do quite well with what they are given, but that doesn’t mean life is easy. The varied nature of their family environment plays a far greater role than the built environment around them.
