Vernazza is the next to the northernmost town and perhaps most picturesque of the five towns of Cinque Terre in Italy. The first records recognizing Vernazza as a fortified town date back to the year 1080. Colorful, antique homes cling to impossible cliffs. A lovely small harbor nestles under the shadows of an ancient castle and a dramatic seaside church. Vernazza's historic wealth is evidenced by the elegant style of its houses and streets, which are decorated with tower forms, open galleries, refined arcades and elaborate doorways. The Village is surrounded by very steeply-terraced olive groves which are said to produce among the finest olive oil in the country. On October 25, 2011, an unusually severe rainstorm brought flash flooding and landslides, to the Unesco World Heritage Cinque Terre towns of Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare — filling the streets with rocks, mud and debris up to 13 feet deep while also overwhelming the railroad tracks that provided the primary way in or out of Vernazza. This image, Vernazza, speaks to the will of the human spirit. Less than 12 months after the horrific downpour, Vernazza has been restored to its previous glory.
