Kambala is a traditional buffalo race held every year in Karnataka (India), in the Tulu Nadu region. Born as a form of entertainment, it has evolved into a competition. Races can last up to 48 hrs and take place into two tracks filled with water. Besides its sporty nature, the kambala has numerous religious and political implications and is today much discussed in India as a way to perpetuate the feudalism and the system of division into castes. Given the extensive media coverage, the race is a useful propaganda opportunity for local politicians who often become sponsors of the event.
