A sentinel guarding the perimeter of the fort or a scout heading out on a night mission, this image invokes a sense of solitude of the solitary figure heading out in the darkness that surrounds him. In reality I noticed a closed down old west type of tourist attraction on the road outside Las Vegas with spot lights still on. The “Scout” was a statue of a cowboy just outside the entry, but with careful positioning of the camera I was able to create the image I was looking for.

Story

A sentinel guarding the perimeter of the fort or a scout heading out on a night mission, this image invokes a sense of solitude of the solitary figure heading out in the darkness that surrounds him. Also evokes a sense of the unknown, as the Scout heads out, with his weapon at the ready to handle whatever may lay ahead of him, leaving the safety of the fort behind. Comparisons to our modern lives can be made when we walk out the door every day, armed with the knowledge that we don't quite know what lies ahead of us on that day, whether good or bad, prepared as best we can be for the unknown. In reality I noticed a closed down old west type of tourist attraction on the road outside Las Vegas with spot lights still on. The “Scout” was a statue of a cowboy just outside the entry, but with careful positioning of the camera I was able to create the image I was looking for. Using a telephoto lens, the cowboy appears to be cresting a hill or passing though some tumbleweeds, which is just the vegetation between the camera and the statue.
