My “Empty ocean” series (consisting of groupings titled “water”, 'ocean”, “seascapes” and “cityscapes” is created just inches below the surface where the movement of the water, turbulance, wave action and currents is most pronounced. I use water and light and motion of my body and the camera + the imperfections of the housing dome that allow me to create marks on film, then on paper. My still camera is enclosed in the underwater housing allowing me to view two scenes at once: one plane is the surface of my housing, the other surface is the surroundings in view of the camera. Instead of trying to overcome the constant challenge facing underwater photographers trying to create figurative UW imagery beyond that one extra surface (the housing dome) I use that extra surface as my tool to draw with. Simultaneously, in the background seen through the water , I find sky, water or a shore, my camera settings and the movement allowing for different tones and textures and various degrees of abstraction to be created/recorded by using slow shutter speed & the movement. By moving my camera and using adequate exposure and aperture, I control/create my marks that will in the final image appear across the background image. As in all my underwater images, my work is not a documentation but an artistic choice to illuminate.

Story
