Entry Title: "Unseen"
Name: Nicole Gibson , United States
Category and Expertise: Abstract|Deeper Perspective, Non-Professional

Entry Description: From a series exploring the relationship between what is seen and what is unseen. Dealing specifically with humanity, I photograph the body in a way that prompts viewers to ask more about what they’re looking at and what lies beyond the small frame of what they can see. This work explores the idea that the most important and truly defining things about us as human beings are the things that can’t been seen. It’s about the idea that there’s more to us than can be understood from a limited or outside perspective.

Story: In today’s media-packed age, we have access to more information about the world than ever before. But that also means we may gain more secondhand knowledge than ever before. We may “know” a great deal about other people, without ever having met them, and unfortunately, the results are not always positive. Stereotypes and prejudices are now part of life on a global scale, and as the world gets smaller and smaller, relating to one another will be ever-increasingly important. This work is about the relationship between what is seen and what is unseen. In it, I deal specifically with humanity, photographing the body in a way that prompts viewers to ask more about what they’re looking at and what lies beyond the small frame of what they can see. This series deals with the idea that the most important and truly defining things about us as human beings are the things that can’t been seen. It’s also about the idea that there’s more to us - and those with whom we share this planet - than can be understood from a limited or outside perspective. We must get to know more before we can truly understand.
