Estimates are that on any given day 3,000,000 people around the world are behind bars awaiting trial. Many will spend months or even years without legal representation, detained in squalid conditions, while their families suffer the consequences. Locking away millions of people who are presumed innocent is a waste of human potential that undermines economic development. These images document victims of pretrial detention in Malawi. Here the results are crippling to family and village life, as it is not uncommon for families to lose almost everything trying to stay afloat and afford the costs of visiting an imprisoned loved one.
