In the Eros/Thanatos series, each image is charged with human emotional, intellectual or sexual struggles. Robierb’s images show the struggle can sometimes be with one’s self. In some images, a singular subject is trapped in a desire, situation or feeling while straining to change. Other images reveal life’s pilgrimage can be with a partner, desiring lifelong bonds and connections while maintaining an individual identity. But, as humans, we also create more complicated emotional and sexual connections provoking turmoil with society. Eros, the Greek god of sexuality, and Thanatos, god of death become Robierb’s fantasy backdrop for real-life discourse of social and sexual emancipation. The artist applies highlights, shadows and abrupt image shifts to represent the struggle that can only happen in the breath of life.
