Jaisalmer is a city in the western state of Rajasthan, India. It lies in the heart of the great Thar desert. It is located 357 miles from Jaipur the state capital. The town stands on a ridge of yellow sandstone and is owned by a fort nicknamed "The Golden Fort". Inside the Fort are a palace and many ornate temples and houses sulptured out of yellow sandstone, giving it a yellowish golden tinge. Jaisalmer was built by a Rajput King named Maharawal Jaisal Singh in 1156. In 1293 it was attacked by the Mughal Emperor Ala-ud-din Khilji.
