I was covering the bushfire that had started in Gisborne and was heading towards Riddells Creek. After helping a resident move his horses (and taking his photo at the same time), I went to the property next door where the fire was heading. I noticed a large herd of deer, that had nowhere to go with the fire approaching up the hill behind them and the fence in front of them, and between us. I captured this picture of the frightened deer looking for a way out, and then a water bombing helicopter dropped it’s load right next to the deer, giving them an escape route.
