This work is a result of the last six years of traveling to the community of Zwide in Port Elizabeth. The project is inspired by the South African philosophy of Ubuntu, the essence of being human. Simply put, a person is a person through other people. I am because you are. Humanity is a quality we owe to each other. We bring each other into being and need to preserve this otherness creation. This humanity is not exclusive to the individual. These photographs are intersubjective creations in which the other becomes a mirror for my subjectivity.
Tim Hans grew up with a love for people and making things happen. Along with his skateboard and a camera, Hans carries this sensibility with him — while in fleeting moments of mutual fascination, he captures the people and places that give our existence character.
