These are portraits from a series called Australiana Land. This is an examination of particular aspects of the Australian culture; specifically the suburban landscape. There remains a particular myth surrounding Australia. One that is synonymous with surfing, beaches and the outback. But Australia is equally about vast suburban sprawl, utilitarian brick buildings, long roads and small shopping centres. As a teenager I hated it; now I have a begrudging nostalgia for the culture that I found so ugly in my youth. Both the Australian landscape and the people have a coarse edge that makes for sincere, funny and compelling images.
