In June 2013 & May 2014, I was invited to Afghanistan by Skateistan and had unique and exclusive access to this small Afghan NGO. Skateistan is multi-ethnic and takes in children from all backgrounds, over 50% of the students are street working children and 40% are girls. Aside from the thrill of learning to skateboard and the associated increase in self-confidence, Skateistan now educates children, teaches leadership and cultural awareness. The organisation has seen older children go on to help the younger children and take on responsibility for themselves and their hopes for their future.
