Nyati Sarkar's body lies, eyelid covered with a leaf of Tulsi (basil), before cremation. The Tulsi plant or Indian basil is an important symbol in the Hindu religious traditions, so much so that a Hindu household is considered incomplete if it doesn't have a tulsi plant in the courtyard. Nyati Sarkar, 50 years old, worked as a cleaner in a hospital in Habiganj District in the Division of Sylhet, Bangladesh. She was suffering from heart disease and was on medication. She ran out of crucial medication a day before, so Bikash, her son, went to the local village pharmacies but they were out of stock. He then traveled to nearest major town, about two and half hours away by boat, but as soon as he got there, he was informed that his mother had a stroke and passed away.
