The current scale of people fleeing conflict and insecurity in Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi is outpacing Syria, Yemen and Iraq. Since January 2017 thousands have arrived in Tanzania?s Nyarugusu Refugee Camp which opened 20 years ago and now accommodates over 150,000 refugees, 80% are women and children. Beyond capacity and worsening conditions the story remains untold. Is it because 10-100 people arrive daily over 18 months and not the thousands at one time? With donor-funding at an all-time low, Nyarugusu is a forgotten place, and those who suffer the most are the children.
The current scale of people fleeing conflict and insecurity in Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi is outpacing Syria, Yemen and Iraq. Since January 2017 thousands have arrived in Tanzania’s Nyarugusu Refugee Camp which opened 20 years ago and now accommodates over 150,000 refugees. 80 refugees are women and children. The camp is way beyond capacity and conditions continue to worsen yet the story remains untold. Instead of 10-100 people arriving daily over 18 months if thousands arrived at one time, would the world notice then? Donor-funding at an all-time low, Nyarugusu is certainly a forgotten place. Who is it that suffers the most? The children.
This series taken in October and November 2017 highlights the conditions of the camp as experienced by the children to bring awareness to this untold story and help raise support for donor-funding.
