Photographs of over painted graffiti from the Gobi Desert region of China.

Story

The building sites of the Gobi Desert offer wonderful subject matter.
In China, graffiti is quickly over painted by the authorities and to my Western eye, their efforts become inadvertent calligraphic artwork. A site in Jiayuguan was a delight to shoot, with the locals scratching their heads as to why....
Centuries of graffiti, scratched into the hand cut stone of the Mati Temple in the Sunan Yugur Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture created the perfect mix of man v the elements, the ancient Buddhist paintings almost obscured by layers of small carved symbols.
