Angelika Hala Connecting places and persons from a friend's final days of life - triumphant in their collective memory, memorializing an existence, creating a monument.
Produced in Libya and North Africa, my work uses as a jumping off point a speculative investigation into the death & disappearance of my close friend, photojournalist Anton Hammerl, during the 2011 Libyan war. He's mortal remains are missing to this day. By retracing Anton’s steps, the places he visited and where he met his end, by engaging with those he met or photographed & others involved or affected by the conflict (combatants, civilians, Libyan dissidents in hiding, etc), by seeking meaningful intersections between our journeys, I was able to step into his shoes, even if momentarily.
