I traveled to Gunung Ijen in Indonesia in May 2023. A blue lake sits at the top of this volcano, known as the largest highly acidic crater lake in the world. The blue lake is also a labor-intensive sulfur mining site. Miners carry baskets full of sulfur with their bare hands from the crater floor, back and forth to the steep crater rim and down the mountain. The weight carried by a single person each time is about 165-198 pounds, most of the miners will make such journeys twice a day, day after day. Miners are not adequately protected while working around the crater. I want them to be seen.
