During the longest and bloodiest battle of the war in Ukraine, as the city of Bakhmut slowly withered away, men women, and children were living inside basements under destroyed buildings. Having to flee from her eastern hometown of Popasna at the beginning of the war, elven-year-old Melania spent approximately one year in Bakhmut, until the city fell to Russian hands, at which point the Russian forces evacuated her and her family and friends. In the photo, Melania sits on her bed inside her bomb shelter and practices the ukulele, while a never-ending thunderstorm shakes the ground above her.
