During the winter months in the hilly area of the Monferrato in North-West Italy the fog rolls into the valleys, creating swathes of cloud around the villages perched atop the hills, and in each village the church is always at the highest point of the hill. As the clouds swirl around the churches give the impression of being sentinels on a path to heaven, the ultimate place of peace.
