“Charrería” is a discipline that emerged from equestrian livestock traditions in Mexico. During the Colony, indigenous people were prohibited from riding horses, however with the increase in economic activities in haciendas across the country, horsemen were needed to herd the livestock. Through time it became a sport that is representative of Mexican culture, and consists of 9 disciplines performed in traditional costumes. Charros are a Cavalry Reserve of the Mexican Army, and their sport was recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage by the United Nations in 2016.
